Message from the Chair

Petra Dekens

Welcome to Department of Earth & Climate Sciences!

We are a dynamic department devoted to preparing our students for careers in geology, water resources, and climate sciences. Our faculty's international recognized research programs answer fundamental questions about the physical processes that control our changing planet.

Our department strongly believes that students of all levels should be included in research and field experiences as essential parts of their training for careers in Earth science. Faculty and students in our undergraduate and graduate programs work together to apply both foundational and interdisciplinary approaches to better understand critical Earth processes that impact our planet and the animals and humans that inhabit it.

We welcome people from all cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, nationality, genders, sexual orientations, neurotypes, sizes, religions, ages, family structures and political opinions. We support all our students through small class sizes, one on one mentoring, regular academic advising, a variety of available scholarships, and research opportunities.

As climate continues to change well educated Earth scientists are in high demand to help tackle the critical and complex interdisciplinary problems society is facing. We hope you will join us!
